For a kick-off, and whatever the season, you need a self-storage facility that allows you easy access, and that is centrally located just in case you need to pop back for any reason or add to your list of stored items, and we’re ticking this first box in bright green neon! You don’t want to be travelling farther than is absolutely necessary in drab wintry conditions.
It’s a wrap
The cold and lack of use isn’t a very friendly set of circumstances for certain of your belongings wherever they are, including our clean, dry and secure self storage units, and that’s why it pays to take some extra precautionary wrapping measures.
Best use wool or cotton packing blankets rather than vinyl or plastic ones that can trap moisture. Padding is also something that you might want to think about for both manoeuvring ease and so that you don’t scratch or chip anything in transit. We have everything that you need in our Box Shop.
Repair before you store
Always a good idea to get ahead by sewing or sticking or patching any summer clothes you’re hibernating with Edinburgh Self Storage for the winter. That way, you don’t get downhearted come the day you retrieve it only to find that it’s not as you remembered, because our memories have a habit of blocking out rips and tears. You’ll be able to just pop it on and walk in the summer sunshine!
Clean before you store
Channel your inner Kim Woodburn and say no to filth! Keeping it all clean by getting rid of anything unwanted that might have become attached to your stuff in the move, like pesky debris and dirt, will help keep your unit free of it and go some way to controlling the proliferation of dust.
Electronic elevation
On the ground of your clean, dry, secure storage unit is still not a highly recommended place for electronics because it loses heat quicker than higher up on the shelves, and this can, we’re reliably informed, affect the inner workings of your equipment and batteries. Plus it stands a greater chance of getting kicked and scuffed languishing down there.
Garden furniture, tools and stuff
The barbecue, gazebo, lawnmower, padding pools, outdoor toys for the kids – all the vestiges of a summer long gone and unless you’ve room for a pony, or your home and garage are affording you more room than you know what to do with, you should be thinking about banking them with us too. They aren’t going to see the light of day until springtime really are they? Unless you decide to do some bizarre TicToK challenge involving one or all of them!
Camping gear no more
A Scottish winter would be a tough nut to crack for Bear Grylls let alone anybody else, and that’s why your inner voice is also telling you that you should be placing your camping gear with us too, until such time as the ground warms up and you can get that camping stove lit and sleeping bags unrolled.
Get that summer sports equipment to a self storage facility!
Anyone for tennis? Round of golf? Doubtful when the ground’s as hard as iron and water’s like a stone and that’s why you should gather up all your summer sporting accoutrement and bid it adieu too so that it’s not choking up your hallway or attic or garage. It’ll be perfectly rested with us by the time spring comes around.
Store summer furniture
It’s a good idea to cover everything, including the floor, with plastic sheets to help protect both from dust and damage, making it easier to move heavier summer furniture items. Keep the corresponding nuts, bolts and screws in a plastic bag once you’ve done the disassembling, then strap to the furniture or place inside locked drawers or cupboards.
Pack big, heavy items at the bottom with lighter, smaller ones on top, and please ensure the top items are stable and securely fastened using cable ties, soft rope or plastic wrap. For added padding, place foam underneath to protect the surfaces, and use extra on the bottom when storing furniture on top of one another to avoid damaging the fabric.

DIY tools and equipment
Done with DIY for this year? You’re perhaps not going to manage any before the springtime really are you. Winter is a time for coorying in during those long nights not being up a ladder with a dripping roller, plus you don’t want to be looking at paint-splattered tins and brushes and ladders and dust sheets. Why not add them to your winter storage list and be done with it!
Hide your Christmas gifts
Finally, some people are impossible to hide gifts from (we all have one in our lives) but if they don’t have the key to your storage unit they’ll never rumble your surprise, so why not consider hiding away your Christmas gifts with us too. We promise we won’t squeal.
