Making a list of everything you’re storing inside is the best start you could make before you even begin to think about loading up your unit. That way, you can refer to it in the future when you’re at home rather than go hunting high and low for it in the loft or pulling everything out of cupboards had you not made the inventory. Sounds obvious, but you must try and make sure that you choose the right boxes. If you’re bringing ones from home, there’s a likelihood that they might be damaged or get damaged in transit and if they are compromised with missing flaps etc, they aren’t going to stack very well and could topple over, not to mention exposing your belongings to the air.
The science to packing your boxes
Packing heavier stuff at the bottom of the box is the way to go, as it will not only make them easier to manoeuvre and stack, it will also protect the contents and prevent them shifting in transit.
Sift your belongings into categories
Kitchen stuff in with the bathroom stuff sounds like the stuff of nightmares to some of you no doubt and there’s definitely merit to categorising your belongings so that you know what’s what and can lay your hands on them in a jiffy.
Label to your heart’s content
Labelling might sound like common sense but it can often be overlooked because we all tell ourselves ‘I’ll remember what I packed and where’ but the reality is you probably won’t. If you label your boxes as you pack and make a list of where everything is located, it will save you time and reduce stress when it comes to finding what you need further down the line. You might want to label according to room, fragility, etc.
Make use of small spaces
Once you the larger items are all in your storage unit, you might want to stuff any gaps or unused space with smaller, niftier items and ensure your belongings are packed in tightly to best utilise the available space.
Keep stuff you might need at the drop of a hat close to the door
Seasonal clothing, holiday items or important documents close to the door will save you time and any rooting around and cabin to pull everything out so that you can wade through it and then put it all back in again too of course.
The dimensions matter
Larger boxes or furniture, such as wardrobes or beds, you might wish to place them sideways to maximise vertical space. You can then fill these with softer items such as spare duvets, pillows or clothes to avoid wasting any space.
