If you’re moving home, in between homes or going on extended holiday you might find self-storage useful, so you can rest in the knowledge that your belongings are safe and secure.
Stress-free storage with Edinburgh Self Storage
As with most things in life, preparation is key, so we’ve prepared this brief guide to prepare your stuff for stress-free storage.
Books
The main thing to remember with books is that they’re weighty – boxes of books are heavy and difficult to lift, carry and stack. Pack into smaller boxes and sort by category for easy unpacking at the other end. Don’t forget to mark the boxes with contents for easy identification later.
Furniture
To protect any furniture going into storage, use a dust cover or transit blankets and pack soft furnishings in boxes or vacuum bags. Mattress covers will protect your mattresses from dust and other contaminants and should be stored vertically to maximise space.
Fragile Items, Glassware and Crockery
Wrap all fragile items and glassware separately in tissue or bubble wrap. To prevent items moving around, place a layer of packing chips or other protective material in the bottom, top and in any spare space within the box for added protection. Mark the carton “Fragile” or use “Fragile” packing tape, and make sure they’re not stacked under heavy items or boxes.
Artwork and mirrors
These fragile items should be wrapped in packing paper and corrugated cardboard or bubble wrap and stored away from any heavy or awkward items.
Electronic Equipment
Ensure all electricals are clean and dry before storing. Sensitive electronic equipment is best stored in its original packaging or another suitable carton. If storing kitchen appliances or whitegoods, be sure they are thoroughly clean, dry and defrosted to prevent moisture or mildew damaging your valuables – and store with doors slightly ajar.
Clothing, Bedding and Soft Furnishings
Wash clothing and linens before storage and use cedar balls to keep moths at bay and to keep clothing fresh. Storing clothing in wardrobe boxes to keep it dust and wrinkle-free makes life easier when it comes back out of storage – simply remove and hang! Use vacuum bags for the most efficient use of space when storing soft furnishings or linens, but only if storage is short term. The lack of air inside a vacuum bag can cause the fibres in your clothes to compress, ruining their shape and fit. For longer-term storage pack in boxes or plastic clip boxes. Wedding dresses should NEVER be vacuum-packed – consult specialist wedding dress boxing services instead.
