Why spend a scary amount of money on Halloween decorations when you can make some that will really do the trick (or treat)?
Feast your eyes on this lot for some homemade hints.
Pumpkins and candlesticks
Spray paint is your best pal if you’re in the homemade Halloween decoration game. Likewise, all those old wine bottles sat in the departure lounge before take-off to the bottle bank. Hold onto them and spray them in Halloween colours and then bung a black candle in the top of each one and once the wax starts to drip, the messier the better.
You can also spray paint pumpkins and decorate them with scary or funny faces and you have complete creative license here to do whatever you like, and Instagram and Pinterest have some top ideas to raise your game and your inner ghoul.
Pumpkin vase
A pumpkin vase looks great as a centrepiece for a table out of a hollowed-out one with some lovely flowers stuck in the top of it. The secret is to conceal a water-filled vase inside. Equally, you can fill it with cider so that it becomes an organic punch bowl and raise everybody’s spirits!
Vampire Bat Leaves
This is so simple yet scary and a great activity for the kids to lend a helping hand with. Go gather some fallen leaves, spray them with black paint and then draw on some spooky little faces using white paint. They look really good.
Googly-eye everything
Googly-eye everything that you can lay all your hands on. Fruit and vegetables are a good start, as long as you remember to remove them before eating. Or you might want to add the eyes to your computer or mirrors so that it looks like a ghost is looking back at you.
Snake Wreath
A snake wreath is enough to spook even the toughest nut and it’s fun and simple to craft. All you do is weave some of those plastic and rubber snakes you can buy online in and out of a twig wreath that is also fairly easy to come by or make if you’re crafty. You might need to use glue to affix the snakes properly otherwise they could boing out. Or perhaps you want this to happen for extra spooks?
Fabric cobwebs
Black distressed fabric can replace cobweb and spider accessories and look a wee bit classier if you can’t face the thought of spidery stuff all over your lounge. Try draping it over the mantelpiece to see how it looks and then take it from there.
Floating candles
We can’t do a blog like this without mentioning the films featuring a certain young trainee wizard and his pals, and if you want some floating candles like in the films, then the great news is that you can make them, but you will need some of those long, thin battery operated candles.
Use masking tape to mask off the candle flame bit and then apply black spray paint to the entire candle following the directions on the can and let it dry. Apply gold paint heavier on the bottom and lighter on top to create an ombre – blending one colour with the other – effect on each candle.
Let it dry for 24 hours before full use. Attach fishing wire with hot glue and let it dry before hanging. Hang your candles from the ceiling to give them a floating effect.
Floating witches hats
If you’ve got some black witches hats lying around from previous years, why not recycle them as floating hats using fishing wire. These look great hanging from a window or a tree if the weather is fine enough, come Halloween.
