One of the things we’re really excited about at Edinburgh Self Storage is our partnership with Edinburgh Academical Football Club, or Edinburgh Accies as they’re more affectionately known.
Despite the name, they’re actually the oldest rugby club in Scotland (and the second oldest in the world). We couldn’t be prouder to sponsor them.
Scotland’s Oldest Rugby Club
The club was set up in 1857 by former pupils of Edinburgh Academy and the first ever international rugby match was held 14 years later.
This year, the Accies are celebrating the end of their 160th season with a day of celebrations coming up on Saturday 9th June.
You can go and join in from noon, when there’ll be a bar and BBQ. Fingers crossed for good weather! Of course, there’ll be plenty of rugby on the go to keep you entertained all afternoon.
There’s a lunchtime kick-off for the touch rugby tournament and at 3pm Edinburgh Academicals take on Merchistonians for a full rugby match. Edinburgh Academy first took on Merchison Castle School in 1859, making this the world’s oldest surviving organised rugby fixture. That’s pretty good going!
The party gets into full swing at 7pm and your ticket includes a complimentary drink, summer buffet, birthday cake, raffle and music.
[We should just tell you more about the cake because who doesn’t love cake? The Accies have teamed up with local bakery The Pastry Section which now offers a 10% discount for members. They’ve got a café and a take away just around the corner from the ground and they’re baking the cake for the big day. We can’t wait!]
Rugby 7s
If you’re not sure if rugby’s for you (as a player or supporter!), Rugby 7s is a great introduction to the game. There are seven players on a full-sized pitch playing seven minutes in each half. As you can imagine, it’s pretty fast and furious and the tournaments are a great day out for the whole family, too.
The Edinburgh Accies team has done pretty well during the last 7s season, reaching six out of ten of their semi-finals. In fact, they’ve had a cracking season all round, having finished top of the BT National League Division 1. Well done lads!
