You’ll be relieved to know that they’re now bright, modern facilities with state of the art access and technology. That said, it’s not always been the case, and through the years, self-storage lockers – for better or worse – have inspired the imagination of many a screenwriter. The turn of the key to reveal the dark secrets within was too good an opportunity to miss for these most famous Hollywood hits:
Monster – 2003
Monster is a biographical crime drama based on the life of prostitute turned serial killer Aileen Wuornos, famously played by an unrecognisable Charlize Theron. While trying to turn her life around, Aileen keeps her belongings in a storage unit.
Citizen Kane – 1941
This classic movie, starring Orson Welles is a quasi-biographical account of the life of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, and is considered to the ‘best film ever made’ in many categories and was nominated for several Oscars, finally taking the gong for Best Writing. And yes, it features a scene where Charles refers to putting his mother’s belongings into storage “out west” after her death.
Silence of the Lambs – 1991
Can you believe this groundbreaking movie was made over twenty-eight years ago? Arguably this is the most famous of them all – and it includes many unforgettable movie scenes – but one of the most unforgettable is THAT scene where Hannibal Lecter provides Clarice Starling with a ‘head start’ (terrible pun – sorry) to find so-called Buffalo Bill. Lecter suggests she should check out Miss Mofet at Split City’. Clarice checks out Split City Mini-Storage, where Unit 31, leased for ten years – all paid in advance by a Miss Hester Mofet – reveals more than she bargained for, and unscrambling the name of the lease owner leads her to discover something much more sinister.
