Working from home isn’t suited to everybody, but for those that can still do it post-pandemic, it can help strike a healthier work-life balance, boost productivity, and keep you firmly on the outskirts of messy workplace politics. And our Business Storage can help when it comes to you organising your home office so that you can get on with the job at hand and create a clear delineation between your time and work time within those four walls.
Your home office and Edinburgh Self Storage
When getting your office space into shape, you will doubtless come across stuff that you don’t need right now and that’s where Edinburgh Self Storage comes in. Our storage units are the perfect place for archiving documents and furniture that is getting in the way of you and organising your home office.
Make space for an office
The first thing you have to do of course is designate a space. You must have somewhere you can go to work and then close the door on without having to clear everything away afterwards. The dining room or kitchen table is an okay interim fix, but you can’t commandeer either indefinitely.
Clear out the space and get a proper desk and chair, doesn’t have to be pricey. Just comfy. And with plenty of lumber support too of course.
Try to set some working hours that coincide with when the kids are out so that you avoid them bursting in on you like in that viral video of the guy on the Zoom call!
Organise it
Boxes are always a good starting point along the road to organisation and we’ve got every shape and size in our Box Shop. Even in this digitised time, it’s amazing how many paper documents we must still keep for one reason or another.
Make it homely
Shelves are ideal for all that stuff you need within easy reach. You can also put some pictures on them to give your office space more of a homely, comforting feel on those tricksy days. You might also string up some lovely wee lights to make it all nice and cosy.
Wireless
Try to make your home office as wireless as possible. You’re only going to tie yourself in knots with bundles of messy wires and wish you’d have tied them together at the start rather than lump them together and try to hide them. They have a habit of edging out into the light eventually. Those wee tie things are just the ticket.
A stitch in time
We all know that a stitch in time saves nine blah blah blah and that it’s not always easy to keep on top of things and all in order all of the time, but when it comes to your home office, you might want to invest in a shredder and some labels so that get in the admin habit from the off!
Take note
If you need to brainstorm, a whiteboard and markers are great. Even if it’s just your brain. We’ve heard that standing up once an hour is good for you. Likewise a pin board or cork board. Might sound a bit old-fashioned, but out of sight out of mind. You can see things at a glance rather than have everything set to remind you digitally.
Desk the halls!
Hallways are great for your home office if you don’t have the luxury of an extra/spare room. You can go to town creatively, working in an open cupboard with shelving and a desk and all your stuff to hand with lots of lovely stuff around to inspire you. Under-the-stairs is equally as strong a proposition.
When in storage…
Our business storage units will help you maximise the available space. Just make sure that you take the organisational spirit into what you’re storing by labelling all boxes and containers clearly so you can easily find what you are looking for, all detailed in handy inventory.
