The report likewise found that those renovating their home are three times more likely to consider using self-storage, while 16% of customers have changed how they use self-storage as a result of increasing inflation, with 68% now using self-storage more frequently as a consequence. More than a quarter of self-storage customers (27%) use storage because their homes are too small, with the average UK household being 2.4 people – that’s more than Germany and France
Storage is part of the history of Leith
And finally, let’s wrap things up with a brief history lesson. According to Leith’s rich and colourful history, storage must be in the water or the air. We’re talking wine and whisky storage here.
Wine storage in Leith apparently dates from at least the early 16th century, notably being connected with the Vaults on Henderson Street, and at its peak, there were around 100 warehouses storing wine and brandy.
By the late 1880s and the collapse of wine harvest in Europe, most of these were converted for the storage of whisky used in the growing business of whisky blending and bottling. William Sanderson’s Vat 69 and John Crabbie’s green ginger wine are some famous associations, likewise Macdonald & Muir who went on to purchase Glenmorangie distillery.
By the 1960s, Leith still boasted around 85 bonded warehouses with the final one on Water Street closing its doors in 1995.
