Edinburgh Festivals Get a Helping Hand From Storage

Well folks, it’s that time of year again.  The streets of Edinburgh are awash with tourists asking “what time does the one o’clock gun goes off?”  The pubs and clubs are bursting with stag and hen parties from far and wide every weekend, from now until late October.  Street performers from all over the globe take-over the Royal Mile and spill into the main thoroughfares of the city centre.  Yes, that’s right its summer time in Edinburgh!

For the majority of locals, the festivals are a very welcome source of income with thousands of tourists spending their hard-earned cash visiting attractions.  There are the odd few however who find the festivals nothing more than a headache: getting from A to B in the city centre in the month of August often resembles an obstacle course, not one for the faint hearted either.  At times the population of Edinburgh doubles during the height of the festival period.  However, not all of these visitors are here for a “holiday”

Staging the world’s biggest collection of arts festivals doesn’t happen by magic.  A sizeable infrastructure is required to make sure all of the performers and venues are capable of providing top quality events.  One of the biggest feats conquered by the city is its ability to “accommodate” the thousands of extra inhabitants.  This is only achievable through the goodwill of many locals who vacate their own homes during August, put all their prized personal possessions into self storage and rent them out to agents, performers and staging crews.  Yes, there is monetary gain to be had but without these locals forgoing their homes, the performers would be left without a roof over their heads.
